Fun and Unique Wedding ideas

At the Mackey House, we’ve seen a number of unique and fun things happen at weddings over the years.  Many times the ideas come from the wedding couple – or their family members – and help showcase some of the individuality found within the newlyweds-to-be.

If you’re looking for something that will make your wedding stand out from the others you have been to, start by thinking of the two of you.  What do you like to do together?  Do you have a favorite season?  What about location, is there a place that means a lot to you?  A simple and unique idea can turn into an easily enhanced theme with a few decorations, some music, reception menu, or other creative add-on that doesn’t have to break your budget.

Some of our favorites have been:

–          Unique pictures:  an easy set up really, all you need is a picture “station” with a back drop, some silly hats, necklaces, scarves, etc., and you have all the makings for a fun photo booth to capture silly moments with your friends and family to commemorate your special day.

–          Unique color schemes: if the wedding couple has favorite colors, this is the time to let them shine.  Don’t be afraid to play with colors and drape them throughout your wedding – both ceremony and reception – adding splashes of color, fun items in those same colors, drinks, food, deserts, candies – can make your wedding as memorable as the two of you.

–          Unique themes: while it sounds a little convention-ish, you can do a theme wedding and still maintain all the uniqueness that is the two of you.  Are you fans of a particular television show?  What about a music group?  Cartoons that you watched growing up as a kid?  Think of all the things you have in common and how those can become underlying themes at the one day that celebrates your love!

–          Unique entertainment:  do you both love jazz?  Perhaps you spend weekends together at the art museum in town?  Do the two of you love to laugh?  Take some of the common threads that make your relationship stronger and incorporate them into your reception.  Hire a great musician, an artist, or a comedian to perform as the entertainment piece of your reception.

Fall planning keeps Summer cooler in Savannah, GA

Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but as mercury begins to rise – predicted to hit triple digits without the assistance of the heat index this weekend – we are starting to plan for Fall Events at The Mackey House.

Fall is a busy time of year, particularly around here.  Lots of Autumn Weddings, Corporate Events, and Family Gatherings tend to take place prior to the business that often follows the Winter Holidays.

A few things to keep in mind as you begin planning your Fall Events:

1)      Autumn Themes – we talk about themes frequently because of the energy given to a central idea particularly when planning the event décor – here are some great ideas (and pictures!) from Better Homes and Gardens for Fall Harvest Parties.

2)      Southern Weather – while it starts to get chilly earlier in the northern part of the states, we do start feeling an evening chill by mid-to-late October, maybe not what the northern transplants are used to, but it is sweater weather to us southerners!

3)      Food – fall food brings a completely different menu than Summer especially when it comes to feeding guests.  Foods typically served in Autumn are more savory and lean toward warm flavors straight from the harvest.  We found some fun ideas from The Food Network – and don’t forget squash season is fall…acorn, butternut, winter –YUM!!

4)      Beverages – Autumn is the time you can bring warm drinks into the picture as well – not just flavored coffees, but apple cider, hot cocoa, warm teas, steamers, and more – all the drinks that warm you from the inside!

Before you decide on your next big event, come by The Mackey House and meet with our Event Planning Specialists who will work with you to create a memorable event for all your guests.  Whether you decide to have your party at our venue or elsewhere in the area, we are here to help you create the perfect event!

Summer Celebrations in Savannah, GA

We are getting excited for our nation’s birthday at The Mackey House – The Fourth of July is one of our favorite holidays – with cookouts, family, fireworks, and red, white, and blue, adorning everything – how do you not love it?

That got us thinking about planning for large parties and how The Mackey House Event Planning Specialists work diligently to create memorable events for every occasion, ensuring the perfect venue, the personalized flair, and all the trimmings for all of our clients.

When asking our team how they would plan for family gatherings using a Fourth of July theme – they came up with some amazing ideas:

1)      Tissue Fan Fireworks – while it has been hot and dry in Savannah, Georgia, the draught has ended so fireworks won’t be as dangerous as in years past – but in looking for fun décor ideas, we found this on Martha Stewart’s website and know we’ll incorporate it at some function we’re able to host – sooner rather than later!

2)      Food – of course no celebration is the same without the FOOD – so here we found some new takes on some old favorites for picnics and family gatherings, everything from barbeque to grilled vegetables from The Food Network so check out some classic faves with a new spin!

3)      Beverages – alcoholic and non-alcoholic, the food is only as awesome as the drinks used to wash it down – we turned to an old favorite, celebrations.com, to find this list of red, white, and blue themed drinks…and remember, just because the recipe calls for alcohol doesn’t mean you can’t make it without.

4)      Games – especially if children will be in attendance, you’ll want to have some games for the kids to play – and thanks to Independancedayfun.com – we found this great list of games which includes red, white and blue name game.
Everyone sits in a circle and the leader, who holds a ball of red, white, and blue yarn with one end tied to his/her finger – names an object that is
red and throws the ball of yarn to the next person…who names an object that is blue and wraps the yarn around his/her finger, and tosses the
ball of yarn to another person in the circle…who wraps the yarn around his/her finger and names an object that is white, and so on until
everyone in the circle has had a turn, and the result is a beautiful starburst of red, white, and blue yarn.

Planning for Winter Weddings in Savannah, GA

Although temps here in the south are slowly climbing to peak heights, we’re already thinking about Winter Wedding Season at The Mackey House.

Winter Weddings are some of our favorites for a multitude of reasons.

1)      Southern Winters – while other places across the country experience snow and ice, the south remains, typically, untouched by the terribly frigid weather so getting married where thermostats are cooler but not frozen can lead to vacation time for friends and family members

2)      Decorations – winter wedding decor can bring a plethora of options to the table, literally.  Whether you decide to aim for a black and white color scheme or if you’d prefer to embrace the bold, dark colors of the season, winter options can tie-in seamlessly with tablecloths,  centerpieces, and flower arrangements

3)      Elegance – all weddings, regardless of season, have elegance about them that few other lifetime events can duplicate.  Adding the time of year where all of life becomes still, awaiting the renewal of rebirth (Spring) and you have culminated an aura of beauty and fashion that a bride can easily add into the dress of her entire wedding party

4)      Timing – because of the holidays, the natural flow of most workplaces begins to wind down, making it easier for friends and family to request days off to be a part of your first day as man and wife.  It’s important to have those you love around you when you start your new life path

5)      Food – Winter foods are warm, comforting, and savory.  Finding the perfect combinations to enhance the Winter Season can be fun and challenging but is one of our favorite times in the kitchen, working with the bride and groom to create the perfect plate of options

Whether you’re planning an outdoor winter wonderland for your wedding or an indoor retreat for your guests, The Mackey House can meet all of your needs, including decorations, food, cake, music – our event planning specialists will work with you to create the day you’ve always dreamed your wedding would be.
