Choosing the right wedding dress

While hangin’ out on Facebook, we’ve noticed a number of cool sites designed to help you find the perfect wedding dress.  There are several that we like – most allow you to put in your measurements and see what a number of the styles and colors would do for you.

Brides – Dressing Room
Shopping Lifestyle – Virtual Dressmaker
David’s Bridal – Dress Your Wedding
Perfect Wedding Dress Finder

We’ve also noted a number of trends in wedding dressesparticularly as we head toward 2012.  Some of the new fads we really like are:

Colored dresses
Two dresses (one for the wedding and one for the reception)
Brides Maids in multiple shades

Because traditional white is no longer the norm in all cases, brides have a plethora of options for their perfect day. The most important things to keep in mind as you’re shopping are:

1)     Comfort – whether going for one or two dresses, you’re going to have pictures in both, and you want the dress (or dresses) to be something you’re not afraid to smile and be yourself in.

2)     Style – what looks good on you, what makes you feel pretty, what allows you to move, what makes you say, “yes, this fits me.”

3)     Fit – you want to accentuate your shape, show off your best feature – don’t be afraid to pick a dress that allows you to feel your best about you!

It’s vital to remember this is your day and your wedding day should feel in every way that the day belongs to you.  The dress is an important part of how you see yourself.  Take your time, weigh your options, try on every dress you want to try on, and choose the one that allows you to feel like the dress, and the day, is yours for the taking.

Wedding trends for winter 2012

Wedding trends many times take shape from the previous season and as summer comes to a close, it’s interesting to see what trends are emerging for Winter Weddings – end of 2011 and start of 2012.

A few things to keep in mind as you begin planning your winter wedding, and some of the things we see as cool, new ideas for events.

1)      Dresses – thanks to Kate and William, Victorian gowns are making a big comeback.  Check out Brides list of 2012 dresses.  Other things to keep an eye on: lace sleeves, non-white gowns, ruffles are back baby!

2)      Multiple Dresses – pop music made it popular and weddings are now stealing the show.  Because wedding attire has become
so ornate, a number of brides have worn one dress for the wedding and another one, more comfortable one, for the reception. Check out a Mackey House friend’s blog for more details!

3)      Colors – mixing and matching colors continues to be a trend in weddings.  See Notable Expressions list of how combinations are coming along.  Bold and bright, tailored to your tastes, deep pinks, yellows, and blues paired with neutrals like brown, deep green, and beige.

4)      Themes – mixing and matching likes of both the bride and groom – movies, books, tv shows, outdoors, food – any commonality can become the theme of a wedding.  Because food, cake, favors, and more can be easily turned into themed items, we tend to see themes take shape.  Wedding Path highlights a number of theme ideas.

5)      Eloping – destination weddings are very in at the moment.  They’re economical, they can combine the wedding and the honeymoon, they can be anywhere the couple has a connection.   We listed a number of reasons that eloping can be a good and bad thing in a previous blog!

The closer we get to the next season, the more defined these trends become.  We will continue to point out the things we see each season and don’t hesitate to let us know what you think about new wedding ideas you see as you attend amazing weddings you see throughout the year!

Wedding and Event Planning with Laura Mackey

Wedding planning, especially in a place like Savannah, GA takes a special touch. We discussed that a bit last week in our blog. But our own Laura Mackey has been event planning for years and we chatted with her a bit to see why she believes The Mackey House family does such a great job every time!

Q: Ms. Mackey, describe how you got into event planning.

Laura: We have always been a family that threw great parties. We would invite family and friends and friends of friends to join us for holidays and special occasions. Before we knew it, we were THE place to be for the holidays. All it took was one person to ask us to help with their daughter’s wedding and poof, we were in the wedding business. It just seemed almost natural.

Q: What makes The Mackey House such an ideal location?

Laura: Particularly for our destination brides, we – our staff and I – are able to make their wedding experience a one-stop-shop so to speak. We can make it flow easily for them. We know the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, we know the best places for their family and friends to stay, we know the best vendors to use depending on the wedding party preferences, and we know how to make the day of their dreams become a reality.

Q: How is it you’re able to make incredible things happen?

Laura: My secret to success is to make the bride feel as though she’s the ONLY bride in the world, because she is to her and her loved ones. If we can create the ambiance to fit her vision and to fit her guests comfort level then we’ve done our job and everyone should be happy. I want every wedding day to be perfect and I think my determination for that to be a reality comes across when we meet with the bride and her family. They know I want their day to be everything they’ve always imagined it would be.

Q: What about other events?

Laura: Oh yes, we do corporate events – especially holiday parties, I’ve helped put together parties for offices as intimate as 7 people and offices as large as 150 people. I’ve also worked with my team to host corporate retreats like professional development days and team building exercises. We know several people in the area who can facilitate business gatherings and continuing education events.

Q: And facilities – do you only work with The Mackey House events?

Laura: Absolutely not. We are mobile and happy to help whether you need catering, music, cakes, facilitators, you name it, and we can help you. Consider us more than just The Mackey House event staff, we are event planners, here to help with anything under the sun

Savannah Wedding Planners

Savannah, GA is a special place with plenty of scenery, historic sites, cuisine, picturesque settings, and so much more.  Planning events, particularly weddings in the South’s most incredulous town requires a special touch and some keen knowledge of the city.

Weddings and events are a specialty at The Mackey House making this family an authority on how to make any occasion a celebration to remember.

The top 6 reasons to hire a wedding planner:

1)      Time – planning a wedding, especially one out of town, can take many hours of planning and meetings and visits and samples and…you get the point…sometimes your time is worth hiring someone else to take the lead on a number of details
2)      Experience – how many weddings can you possibly plan in your life?  By bringing on a professional, someone that know exactly where to get what you want – especially at the price you want to pay – can be a priceless asset
3)      Knowledge – if you’re planning a destination wedding, it’s helpful to have someone located in your selected city that knows where things are, knows where to send your guests for entertainment, knows the best spots to have the bachelor/bachelorette parties
4)      Color scheme – when you visit with one vendor, you may love something they show you but does it go with everything else you’ve chosen?  What about flowers?  How will all of that line up with your bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s tuxes?
5)      Details – someone that plans weddings for a living will know and think about things you never did – pictures that you’re going to want to NOT forget, songs that HAVE to be played, guest dietary needs – and things you’ll need that day, lip gloss, extra hairpins, band aids, etc.

Great wedding planners know how to put your dreams into reality – expressing your emotions through an experience only your guests will truly understand.  Having the ability to articulate your vision into an unforgettable event is what makes your wedding the day you’ve always imagined it would be.

And while The Mackey House is a remarkable venue for any event, your event doesn’t have to be at The Mackey House to have The Mackey family’s expertise advice and planning abilities at your fingertips – they are happy to help you wherever your next big event may happen.
