Finding your ideal Honeymoon Location!

Wouldn’t it be lovely if finding your picturesque honeymoon destination would be a simple as taking a quiz?  Although Brides Magazine did a fabulous job with this one – Honeymoon Finder – there’s a lot more that you’re going to want to consider when finding your special spot!

We have gathered a few of the important details to discuss when planning for your ideal getaway.  Our top five only scratch the surface of how to go about your honeymooning in style, but note the number of questions that go along with each section!

1)      Money – as with a number of things, money is the number one factor.  Decide how much you want to spend on your honeymoon then take a look at what all is within your budget.  Be realistic –have a fair idea of the amount you’d like for the total in mind.
2)      What to do? – What kinds of things do the two of you like to do together?  Are you looking for planned/scheduled activities or are you looking to create your itinerary as you go?    These questions can help you decide how best to reserve your vacation too!
3)      Weather – Beaches versus mountains…it’s as old of a question as you can get.  Are the two of you into the same kinds of activities?  Maybe you want to try something new – scuba diving, snow skiing, sky diving?
4)      Type of vacation – are the two of you adventurers?  Do you prefer cold or warm?  Are you thinking international travel or do you get airsick on planes?  How do you feel about cruises?  These are important questions to discuss prior to picking your place.
5)      National or international – both types of trips have good and bad sides to them.  International requires passports, passes, and other documentation depending on where you’re going.  National can restrict activities depending on location, and so on.

How to purchase an engagement ring

You’ve met the right person.  Families have given their blessings.  Now you’re looking for the right way to ask the BIG question – “Will you marry me?”

We’re assuming you already know the 4 Cs when it comes to buying a diamond:

1)      Cut – shape of the stone
2)      Clarity – color of the stone
3)      Carat – weight of the stone (it’s REALLY spelled Karat, but it’s the point of the exercise)
4)      Cost – talkin’ Benjamins

But there are other things to consider when looking for the perfect ring.

First – be honest, how much can you honestly spend on a ring without wishing you’d spent the funds on the wedding, the honeymoon, or the house.  You can find great rings from $500 to priceless, but knowing what you really can afford is crucial.

Second – it’s not JUST about the stone.  The actual ring part is important too.  If you’re going for traditional wedding/engagement rings, then it needs to be in a ring that you like as well, since you’ll be wearing it as long as your significant other will be.   Silver, yellow gold, white gold, platinum – it’s not as easy as it used to be.  Patterns, no patterns – inscriptions, no inscriptions – choices of actual rings are almost limitless.

Third – it doesn’t HAVE to be a diamond.  Although “diamonds are forever,” so the slogan goes – it’s becoming more and more “hip” to have colored stones for engagement rings.  Many opt for their birthstone or stones of their favorite color.  Know what your fiancée-to-be is thinking – some simply object to the mining issues surrounding some diamond manufacturers so don’t be afraid to ask!

If we can help, let us know.  We work with a number of retailers in the area and can get you in touch with some of the best in the business should you need a recommendation.  The Mackey House intends to help you every step of the way!

You’re married – so now what? Websites to help you deal with the next steps! Part 2

We answered some fundamental next step questions last week – changing your name, combining your tax status, and selling some of your wedding items.  We couldn’t fit all the swirling questions into one blog, so here’s part 2.

This week, we’re looking at thank you notes, handling gift registry returns, and what things you need to combine: accounts, health policies,  insurance, etc.

Thank you notes are burdensome yes, but in today’s day and time, necessary – especially if you sent paper invitations.   If you are environmentally conscious and sent nothing but e-vites, then yes email is appropriate for your audience.  If you didn’t however, then you need to get writing!

The best thing you can do for thank you cards is: KEEP IT SIMPLE!   Even as you look at the numerous thank yous that you need to write, know that you don’t have to write a letter to each person.  Three to four sentences is acceptable.  Thank you cards are helpful in that regard, you can get cards personalized or plain, your choice.

Have everything handy – create a work station:  wedding gift list (check), note cards (check), multiple pens (check), address book (check), stamps (check) – write one and check it off the gift list.  Again, you don’t have to write the world, but a few sentences thanking them for the gift and letting them know how you’ll use it is appropriate.

Gift registry returns – most retailers will work with you, particularly if you registered with them and have a gift receipt.  Without a receipt, you could be in a bit of a bind.  Most people know to get gift receipts, but if not, the best advice – go to the store where you registered for the gift and ask for a return.  It will most likely be handled like regular in-store returns without a receipt would be.

If you’re returning a gift that you didn’t register for – go online and look for the nearest retailer that carries that item’s particular manufacturer.  Again, look for the item to be handled as though it is a regular in-store, no receipt return – in-store credit maybe in your future!

Last but not least, combining your policies/accounts and other items.  A number of policies will give you a discount for multiple coverage accounts – health/life/auto insurance.  Cell phone family plans are typically cheaper than separate accounts.

Other accounts, it’s not so money saving – credit cards, if one of you has better credit, you may want to combine, if not, leaving them separate could save you in the long run.  College loan accounts can’t be combined unless you take out a bank loan and put them together – be cautious with this too as once they are joined into one loan, they cannot be separated.

As for investment accounts and financial accounts (checking and savings), discuss it with a financial advisor.   Some couples have everything combined, others separate – it’s all in what will work for the two of you.

Having an understanding prior to the wedding helps make things go much more smoothly in the long run, but The Mackey House has a number of recommendations if you need some assistance.  Let us know, we’ll be glad to help you get started!
