Wedding Planning 101

Although getting married is a fun time for the happy couple, there are a myriad of things – making arrangements, creating the exact look you want, making sure intricate details are taken care of – that can add tension to the situation.

If you’re able to keep you and your spouse-to-be on a timeline, it can help alleviate some of the pressure and ensure you get the wedding you’ve both always dreamed of having!

Nine to 16 Months

According to Real Simple’s website, you should start planning your wedding nine to sixteen months in advance – starting with your planning binder (or folder).  This helpful tool will enable you to keep clips of things you see in magazines, newspapers, websites, etc – items you like, items you don’t like, where you lean for venues, sometimes it helps you spot your preference pattern.

Next is the budget.  It can be the stickiest of all sticking points for your special day, finding a financial balance between ultimate celebration and massive debt.  The Knot’s Wedding Channel website offers a number of helpful tools for creating a budget.

Six to 9 Months

Now to planning the fun stuff – the ceremony.   Wedalert.com offers a calendar checklist that gives a good overview of what needs to be done when – their window starts at 9-12 months also, but they recommend to begin purchasing items no less than 9 months out.

Things such as selecting venue, photographers, florists, musicians, caterers, and officiates can and should be done BEFORE the 6 month mark, according to weddingmanor.com – and typically, the earlier the better.  Shopping for the wedding gown, dresses for bridesmaids, rehearsal venues, guest list, and gift registries can be completed closer to the 5-6 month mark.

Two to 6 Months

Other sites recommend final arrangements to be made at 4-5 month mark – cake ordering, decorations, wedding favors, transportation.  Also todays-weddings.com says that by 2-3 months away you should have invitations in the mail, obtain the license, start thank you notes, formal wedding portraits, honeymoon and wedding night plans.

Final Stretch

As you go into the last month, make sure to purchase gifts for the bridal party, host the bridesmaids luncheon, and in the final weeks, finalize guest numbers with your caterer, plan seating arrangements, and make sure the wedding rings are ready and have been sized appropriately – suggests howtoplanawedding.com.

There are also other options – hiring a wedding planner, or working with a full service venue, such as The Mackey House.  We can help you with any parts of your checklist that you need, just let us know when you reserve where you need an extra hand, and we’ll help you.  We want your day to be as perfect as you’ve always dreamed!

Getting a surprise ‘I Do’

Kristy and Jeff Weed are much like any couple you’d meet at the local coffee shop. Young, three incredible boys – Cole (7), Maddox (4), and Aiden (1 ½), blossoming careers, high school sweethearts – they couldn’t be happier.

Jeff, however, has been bothered by one little part of their past that he couldn’t let go.

“She never had the wedding she’d always dreamed of having,” he sighs. “She’s such an amazing wife and mother and we were so caught up in other things 8 years ago that we didn’t have time for a real wedding. I KNEW I had to make it right.”

And he made it right – in a big way.

With the help of his super undercover mother-in-law, and the planning team at The Mackey House, Jeff was able to make all of Kristy’s wedding dreams come true.

“I had NO idea how he was going to get her, secretly, into a wedding dress,” admits Cindy Perry, accomplice #1. “He said, ‘I know how to handle it – just keep telling her it’s for our anniversary pictures.’”

This is exactly what Jeff did. He told Kristy that since she never had the wedding, or wedding pictures she wanted, that he was hiring a photographer to take pictures of them and the boys in wedding attire just for their anniversary.

“Mom was so good about it too. She asked what colors I’d want the boys in and I figured black tuxes would be the prettiest. Jeff told me to get the dress I wanted, mom took me to do that, and here I was the entire time thinking ‘isn’t my husband so sweet to do all of this for me,” smiles Kristy.

When they arrived at The Mackey House that morning, Kristy unsuspectingly began getting ready for her surprise wedding.

“Ms. (Laura) Mackey was incredible,” says Kristy, “she played right along. She kept me in the bride’s room getting ready while they were quickly moving in all my friends and family. Ms. Mackey said, ‘stay in here for now, they are setting up for a big wedding tonight and you don’t want to get your dress messed up before the pictures.”

Kristy giggles and shakes her head, “I really had no idea.”

As Kristy emerged from the dressing room, looking stunning as ever, her friends and family awaited for her arrival to the back steps. Shocked at seeing everyone, including her husband standing there smiling at her, she froze.

“Why don’t we have a wedding, Kristy,” the crowd chanted in unison.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” says Trey Mackey, curator of The Mackey House at Red Gate Plantation. “We felt honored to be a part of Jeff’s surprise wedding and we’re excited to commemorate this occasion with them.”

Celebrate with The Mackey House!

OK – so we’re tooting our own horn for a bit – but as you can see from our latest video, this place really becomes something special at dusk.

Although this particular video was shot during Christmas time (note the lighted reindeer on the front lawn), we can decorate with lights for any occasion – pick your wedding colors, your business’ colors, your favorite colors – whatever your needs, we’re sure you can envision this beautiful location adorned with lights in your choice of color.

Winter weddings are especially popular in Savannah, GA.  Because it’s not so cold, we are able to have outdoor weddings until much later in the season than most destination wedding locations.  We are also fortunate that most of our greenery stays green for the majority of the winter season.

The Mackey House gives you an option of indoor areas if you need them – which the temperatures in our region are much more temperate than other climates, you might want an indoor retreat for your wedding guests.  Aside from the house, our outdoor covered seating area can also be heated if temperatures dip too deeply.

We are so excited to be able to bring to you, not only this incredible venue for weddings – which really is our specialty – but for corporate events, birthday parties, graduation parties  — whatever your occasion, we will help make it a memorable one.

If the music sounds familiar, it should.   Since Savannah is so well known as being an incredible spot for Hollywood to visit, the song is Forrest Gump Theme – the song that plays in the background as the feather is flying through the air, both at the movie’s beginning and conclusion.  We thought it appropriate for a myriad of reasons.

Please enjoy!

Top 5 reasons to have a destination wedding in Savannah, GA

The reasons to have a destination wedding are varied and numerous.  Really, all weddings should represent the couple starting their new life together, whether it’s close or far from home.   Destination weddings are gaining in popularity, and many of the reasons listed below are why they are becoming a staple in the wedding world:

1)       The Complete Package – Destination weddings are so “in” right now that you can customize everything you want down to the nit-pickiest detail, and it will be taken care of for you.  Your wedding planner, or site coordinator depending on where you’re getting married, will take care of everything without you having to lift a finger, other than to call and check in occasionally.

2)      Saving Money – Many times, depending on how far the destination may be from family and friends, it can cut down on your costs, particularly for the reception.  For example, if you choose to get married more than 500 miles away from the majority of your family; they may not be able to participate…which can help your bottom line.

3)      Combining Honeymoon and Wedding site – If you’re planning to have your wedding in a special place, you may not need to pay extra travel for your honeymoon, you can stay and your guests can leave – again, it can be a big money saver for your budget.

4)      Creates a “middle ground” – many couples meet in locations where they didn’t grow up these days, maybe you’re from different states or even different countries – a destination wedding can really help both families be able to attend the wedding.  For example, if you grew up in Maryland and your soon to be spouse grew up in Texas, a great destination wedding spot could be (although a little prejudiced on our part) Savannah, GA.  Keeping it on a coastline, it’s a great destination for family members on each side to take a vacation, have the honeymoon, and it’s not TOO far from the families on either side.

5)      GREAT wedding photographs – if you’re picking a destination, not only will it mean something to you, but ultimately the area will mean something to you.  So, instead of having typical wedding photographs (which are nice too), you can have outstanding pictures with the background of your choice – from mountains to ocean, you get to choose what is behind you on your wedding day, guaranteeing you the pictures you’ve always dreamed!

The Mackey House prides itself on our full service ability and to help you, should you choose Savannah, GA as your destination wedding spot, create the wedding day you’ve held in your heart since you said yes to the engagement.  We will work with you, no matter where you are now, to make your dream wedding come to life.
